Our History

The story of Thomas Duncan Hall begins with a deep commitment to community and service.

In the early 1900s, the Community House Association (CHA) was formed to support young women by offering training programs, housing, and even the first free kindergarten in the area. Over time, the organization became a cornerstone of civic life in Lafayette, helping launch important community groups such as the YWCA, Girl Scouts, and Civic Theatre.

The future of the Hall was shaped by Thomas Duncan, a Scottish-born inventor, industrialist, and philanthropist. Inspired by the work of the CHA—and influenced by his wife, Sarah Duncan, a devoted community advocate—Thomas Duncan left funds upon his passing in 1928 to construct a permanent home for the organization.

The result was the elegant Georgian Colonial-style building that stands today.

Designed as a place for social, educational, cultural, and charitable gatherings, Duncan Hall quickly became a centerpiece of the community. Over the decades, it has hosted everything from civic meetings and educational programs to celebrations marking life’s most important milestones.

Today, Thomas Duncan Hall remains a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving this historic treasure while continuing its original purpose—serving as a place where people come together.

Through ongoing restoration efforts, including the revitalization of its gardens and event spaces, the Hall continues to honor its past while welcoming new generations to “add their chapter” to its story.
