Gertrude Shambaugh Room

This ornate English Adams-style parlor is appropriate for poetry readings and book clubs.

This parlor is named for Gertrude Shambaugh who was an early member of the Community House Association (CHA) and served as its treasurer for 46 years. This English designed room shows the influence of the Adams brothers with the use of the Adams urn in the carving of the fireplace mantel and window cornices. A medallion carved in the plastered ceiling is repeated in the panels of the walls and the silver light fixtures. The original rug woven especially for this room also featured the Adams design. Being too worn for use here, the rug was given to the Civic Theater. A similar rug is now used on the oak flooring. Nancy High, past board member, and her brother, Bob Verplank, donated one of their mother's paintings which hangs over the fireplace. Mrs. Verplank was also a board member for many years. The walls are ornately decorated with plaster trim painted cream. A small hand-painted ladies desk with a light wood desk chair sits to one side of the fireplace which is finished with marble and brass andirons and screen.

There are two solid mahogany chairs, two small marble topped tables, and two upholstered wing back chairs. There is one small upholstered maple chair, one green upholstered chair, and two mahogany fern stands. A semicircular mahogany hall table holds a candle stick style lamp. There is a cherry and mahogany sofa of the heppiewhite style. Other appointments include a light wood table painted and grained with a glass top, a Mersman round mahogany pedestal table, a Mersman Duncan Phyfe table in front of the sofa, and a six sided mahogany claw foot triple pedestal table with a glass top. Two elegant bisque finished lamps are used by the sofa. Wall appointments include an ornate brass mirror, a tribute to Gertrude Shambaugh, and a framed commemorative souvenir plate. There is a small bathroom off this room. This room can accommodate 20 - 25 people for meetings.
